i’m just about to head off in the pale uppsala morning but last night i saw the spiral and it was bad; very naive and highly unrealistic without any self-distance and it had all the clichés you’d expect from a crime series so even it was about art (and i like art) i won’t watch the next episode. but anyway, i also saw babel and it was brilliant of course. among many other things they talked about ann charlotte leffler who was born in the same year as strindberg (1849) and before her death in 1892 she’d become a radical writer mainly focusing on female sexuality, a vegetarian, divorced her boring and impotent husband (something she discovered only after they were married…), found new love in Italy, had her first child at 42 and then died from appendicitis. i didn’t know any of this and it made me think about all the other amazing women in history i don’t know about that has been set aside in favor of their male contemporaries. seriously, we need to do something about this.
